Did you know that the NBA changed the basketball they use? Cause honestly, I didn't.

The way I found out was Paul George talking trash about the ball.

So the NBA changed from Spalding to Wilson to basketball. And in the history of the NBA, there have only been 2 changes to the basketball so this is a pretty big deal.

Trae Young and Jamaal Murray were put on Wilson's advisory committee to test the ball. And well, Trae isn't doing so well. The rule changes are definitely one of the factors, which a lot of the fans are liking.

The league is seeing the lowest field goal percentages since the 2004 season and seeing the highest turnovers since the 2006 season, which is the same season that NBA changed basketballs. Turnovers make sense because if the feel of the basketball is different, it can lead to mishandles, weird dribbles, and errant passes.

There are definitely more misses because defenses are allowed to be more physical, leading to bad shots at the rim, foul drawing attempts that get no where, but this season, there have also been some really bad misses. Now bad misses happen every season, but this year's been especially bad. Dame is shooting 23% from 3, the league has the lowest 3 point percentage since the 1998 season.

Now I'm not saying that a new basketball has everything to do with players not shooting well, but players don't have positive things to say. We heard Paul George say the ball doesn't have the same touch or softness.

And as a result, he said that it's gonna be a lot of bad misses, you'll see a lot of bad misses. Keep in mind that Paul George himself is having a great season so far and so he doesn't need any sort of excuse for shooting 41% from 3 and 49% from the field.

CJ McCollum also talked about the ball, saying that players are still getting adjusted to the Wilson basketball. and that he'll talk to more players, so we'll find out more.

The last time the NBA changed the basketball was in 2006, and things didn't go so well. Every player hated the basketball. Shaq called the ball cheap, Dirk said it made his hands bleed. Ray Allen said he had to moisturize his hands because the ball kept cutting his hands.

Spalding made the new ball out of a synthetic microfiber material compared to the leather ball. It was so bad that by the first day in 2007, only a few months into the season, the NBA went back to the leather ball.

Now Wilson apparently used the same materials for this new ball as Spalding so maybe the differences aren’t as stark as the last time they changed it. But the results are pretty drastic.

To those that are saying, well it's just a ball change, we all play with different balls*.* Well you have to consider that at the highest levels where the smallest of differences separate stars from starters and role players, a change in ball can make a difference, especially for shooting and how the ball is leaving the hand. 1 degree of difference in the shot arc can make the ball miss up to 2 inches short and long. Then think about doing that in an NBA game now where defenders are trying to take away what you want, the ball is simply different, and maybe just worse.

This isn't an excuse for players and I don't think any of them are going to use it as such, but maybe that partially explains the weirdly low 3 point percentages for some players. I found it interesting. But what do you think? Is it actually an issue? Who do you think is playing bad this season so far? Why Your Favorite Player Is STRUGGLING In The NBA (Ft. Basketball)
