I have seen people use the end grain for the hearth before. I also saw David West use this method of making a stake hearth that you hammer into the ground, so I thought that I would give it a try.
I just sawed off the end of a small cottonwood tree that I had gathered & used previously. Then I carved it into a stake that would stick into the ground. Thankfully I didn’t have any issues with cracking or breaking. I carved my notch next & then the divot. I just skipped the burn in step. I also created a place to hold a wood ember catch. This was something different for me & it worked out pretty good. I used a piece of charred punkwood for a coal extender. The drill plug was basswood. End Grain Stake Hearth: Hand Drill Friction Fire
